MAN OF SUBSTANCE

CONNERY’S CAREER WAS in the doldrums as the 1980s arrived. A decade earlier, while still working to throw off the shackles of Bond and take on roles that steered away from the escapism of those films, he remained a bankable entity. Life and cinema had changed in the years since. Stars had ceased to drive cinematic success to the same degree as when he rose to prominence, even if it wasn’t his name directly that had made the Bond franchise such a triumph.

Nevertheless, Connery remained determined to blaze his own trail. He would, especially in the first half of the 1980s, dabble in science fiction and fantasy, with films such as Outland and Time Bandits. He would work for directorial legends, men touched by greatness but long past their time, crafting uniquely defiant pictures audiences would immediately forget such as Wrong Is Right or Five Days One Summer.

It was the most under-the-radar period, perhaps, of Connery’s career – post-Bond, pre-Bond return, and just ahead of a 1980s renaissance as a star and icon once more. In fiercely seeking to make films that were nothing like Bond, Connery steadfastly refused to give the people what they wanted. The result: some of the most unusual and creatively divisive pictures he ever made.
